You can also look at an article by Ray English (most widely known
for his quarterly newsletter "Marque One"). You can find it at the

Hey! yourself, TuTone (not that I believe it's your real name).
Go to the following page on Gerard Chateauvieux's excellent website for
information on differentials and much more:
http://www.gerardsgarage.com/GarageContent/Tech/SpridgetSpecs.htm
Assuming it is as original, you diff will be a 4.22 ratio. In December 1968,
Sprites and Midgets were fitted with a 3.9 diff, and Midgets received a 3.7
in August 1977 (Sprite production having ended in July 1971).
Like you, I take long summer trips in my 58, which happily carries on with
its original 948 engine. I replaced the 4.22 diff with a 3.9 a couple of
years ago, and the only downside was a lessened ability to perform
California stops. So, I actually stop and use first gear more often now. You
wouldn't be unhappy with a 3.9 in your car.
I'm in the middle of rebuilding my engine, and will see a significant power
gain, so I'm thinking of trying a 3.7 diff for even lower highway RPMs.
