I found the problem!!!!!
Frank C. was partially right when he said check the rivets on the coil. One
was loose and could have been the problem or part of it. The wire from the
coil to the distributor had been 'patched' by the PO. No solder just twisted
together and covered with electrical tape! Between the two fixes the problem
hasn't reappeared (yet).
Thanks to all who replied. I had a idea it was probably something simple that
I was overlooking.
