Didn't get any answers from my "double trouble II" post, so I'll try again
using a more descriptive subject. ;-)
I was having some weird clunking going on when I braked the other day, and I
think I'm going to have to admit that I have "wheel clunk". I can even turn
the rear wheels a degree or two by hand with the parking brake on. So I
assume at the least I'm looking at new rear hubs and wheels. Do the axles
have to be replaced, or can the hubs be replaced alone?
Alternatively, I'm seriously considering converting to bolt-ons. I love the
look of wires, but between wheel clunk, worrying about tire places properly
installing and balancing, proper truing, etc. I think they may be more
trouble than I want to deal with. What all do I need to convert to bolt-on
wheels? I figure at least:
- Rear axles and studs
- Front hubs and rotors
- And of course, the wheels :-)
What else? The front looks pretty straightforward, but I can't tell much
about how the back is put together, at least from the manuals. Also, I recall
a discussion about the diff housings being different widths. Can I safely use
my current wire wheel housing with bolt-on axles, or do I need to swap?
Anybody have bolt-on parts left over from a conversion they would part with
cheap?
