David -- Right you are. The county is dry. Seems silly
that one of the most popular whiskey producers in the world
is located in a dry county. But, on second thought that may
have been intentional but I don't really think so. Back before
and during the depression years Tennessee was a notorious
place for liquor stills and one by one certain counties became
dry usually pressured by church groups. Same happened in
Georgian and other Southern states including Florida.

Truth be known there are still some to be found deep in the
back woods of the South. Revenuers and small town sheriffs were
known to stop cars having low slung rear ends suspected of stillers
hauling their wares of mason jars filled with white lightening.
Stillers attempted to get around this by installing heavy duty
springs. Problem was that when empty the vehicle's unusual
suspended rear end drew attention for the same reasons.

During my deer hunting days we were very cautious about where
we ventured in the mountains not to stumble onto a country boy's
still. It was a damn good way to get your ass full of buck shot.

Drivers of these cars, usually Fords and Chevrolets, had to be
damn good to outrun the law and to manage the narrow
mountainous roads. And they were good. Could account for the
reason that auto racing has become such a popular sport here
in the South.

White lightening is strong stuff. It never goes down smooth
which in my view is its finest quality. We had a saying that it'll
put hair on your chess and you were not a real man until you
could drink the stuff.

Anyway, at the event I'll be drinking screwdrivers and they'll
never know the difference that is unless ...........

Annice & Bob, sorry you can't make it and we'll see you next time.
