Car History?

Here's a question for no one in particular (and I apologize if this has been
covered before).  How can one go about tracking down the ownership history
of a car?  I only know the P.O. of my '74 Midget.  I may ask him if he still
has the records on who he bought it from. Should I just keep tracing it back
like that, owner to owner, or are there records I could request through some
state office for info?
