Hi Edie, The knurled nut is supposed to slide the vacuum advance diaphragm back and forth in it's mount on the distributor. The diaphragm is linked to the breaker plate, which can rotate within the dizzy, thereby advancing or retarding the spark. Sounds like your diaphragm is stuck, so the nut can't move it.
