Let me add two bits. Think about using a GM TH200. Yeah I know, they
generally were junk when new but, a very dependable one can be built with
today's lessons learned. They are small, very light, a dime a dozen ($0.00 -
$25.00 for a core) and have several different bellhousing configurations
that may lend to adaptation. Tunnel mods would be kept to a minimum and it
is also available in a "lock-up" form. The Street Rod industry lends many
linkage/ kickdown options. Built many of them.
Have fun!
Jay

Ryan,
We have a Bugeye with a GM 350 transmission, No it does NOT fit easily!
There is considerable effort to make room modifying the tunnel.
We also have a Buick V6 under the bonnet so I don't know how a 1275
would mate up the a GM tranny.
