to reverse the rotation of a vw trans axle you remove the differential
carrier with the ring gear and turn it over. if you dont, you get the
dreaded 4 gears in reverse and 1 really low forward drive gear. it was
popular to invert some complete trans axle assemblies such as renault
dauphine and fiat multipla (sp.?) for modified sports racers and formula
cars of the late 50's and 60's before hewland gear boxes became more
available.
the vw ring gear swap was needed when converting vw powered cars to corvair
power. which was a popular conversion from empi and scat (and others) back
in the late 60's and early 70's.
