Yep, Doogie--certainly sounds like you have an ex-racer from Canada. The
first help/advice I would offer is to purchase two, mybe three books--not
necessarily inexpensive, but crucial, in my opinion:
Porter's DIY Guide to Restoration of the MG Midget?Austion Healey Sprite
Hayne's Sprite/Midget manual, and perhaps
Bentley's Sprite/Midget manal
These will give you the practical and technical information you need to
tackle most restoration and maintenance problems you encounter. Plus, of
course, stay tuned to this great list and ask away for information or parts.
Somebody always comes up with an answer, a part, or (and we are long on
these!! <G>) and opinion.
