I'd check the bushings in the radius arms for play before attempting to set the
ring & pinion clearance.  These often sound quite similar to excessive
clearance.
Pulling the axles is straight forward.  Remove brake drum; remove two
countersunk phillips head screws, remove axle.  Puller/force may be needed.  Be
sure to replace the gasket and O-ring.
This is also a good time to R&R rear brake components.
