I've seen three different S2000 convertibles in LA over the past week. The
look is not too exciting--sort of like a Miata but bigger and higher and
with a longer, Z3-ish front. The car may drive great, but I wish more car
companies would realize that there are people who want a small roadster
that's actually _small_.
Toyota seems to have gotten the point. The more I see of the MR-S (aka
MR-Spyder or MR-Spider or MR-2 Convertible), the more impressed I am. It's
significantly shorter than the Miata (despite having a longer wheelbase)
and lower to the ground, and much lighter. And it may not get Honda's
240hp, but if their claims are true (the same power as a Mk2 MR-2, more
torque, faster shifting, and hundreds of pounds lighter), I'm sure I'll be
more than happy with the performance. Plus, every time I see new pictures,
they've retweaked the styling and improved it (thank god that Supra-clone
back end and Celica-clone front end are gone). Oh, and they're projecting
that it will cost a few thousand less than the MR-2 did, which to me
implies the $20k range in America (after all, they already have the
XYR/Celica GT-S and Millenium Supra in the high-20s and mid-30s markets,
and they don't want to compete with themselves).
Still, I think I'll wait for the US release of the Lotus Elise. It just
looks so damn Lotus....
