Hah! My knowledge only comes from previous stupidity,
like having this problem and finding an adjusting nut
completely off a valve, but not before trying to run
the car that way for 1/2 hour or so.  Sooo... Check
valve adjustment, also the more obvious itemes like
bad spark plug, bad/arcing ignition wire (you can even
see it with the lights out sometimes), cracked
distributor.
