Argon/CO2 mixtures are better gases for uncoated steel or "rusty" steel
100% CO2 works better on galvanized metal.

I use both, the mixed gases are better, but a cylinder of CO2 is cheaper.
So, being cheap (excuse me, I mean frugal) I use CO2 more often.  If you are
a "new" welder, the mixed gases give "prettier" welds.
