Gerard,
In the UK the professional paint shops use 2-pack for quicker and more
consistent results, harder finish, better shine etc, but they have all the
proper equipment and installation to make for safe use of iso-cyanate
paints. That cyanide bit kills!

I have painted several cars and lots of bits of cars at home, outside in
good weather, using cellulose based paints (may be called lacquer paints in
the States??). They have largely been phased out by the trade in the UK,
but are still available from some paint stockists. Don't know about
elsewhere.

The experts say that the modern 2 pack paints don't suit older cars - they
are too harsh, and shiney - they don't have the slightly softer patina
appropriate to the original paints used on LBCs.

Whichever paint you use it really is down to preparation before you ever get
near to putting on that top colour coat. Proper prep takes time !

Guy
