Generators gear box.

While we're on the subject of generators....
 I have a 62' with a mechanical tach. Don't want to change it.  The
reduction gear box has bit the dust. It has eaten the brass bushing that
supports the small gear. The gears are fine just not engaged any more.  
 Instead of just rebushing this... Has anyone ever put ball bearings into
one of these?  Source and sizes ?
