I wish I could be more helpful with your overheating problem. Maybe some
sympathy would help?

I once had some work done on my '67 Rover 2000TC and when I got it back, the
temp gauge went up to the top as soon as the thermostat opened. Fearing a
drastic overheating problem, and not wanting to melt the pistons, I parked
the car in a diner parking lot and got another ride home. I bought a new
water pump and went back with my tools to swap it out. If memory serves, it
was a Friday evening, so the shop that did the work was closed until Monday.
Then the thunderstorm came up. I got the job done in the pouring rain.
(Glad it wasn't cold too.)

Refilled the radiator and started it up. As soon as the thermostat opened,
the needle pinned again! It turned out that the two wires on the temp sensor
had been put on backwards! Switched them around when I got home and temp was
normal again.

I wish I had better diagnostic skills. But that was a long time ago (in a
galaxy far away).
