A possible solution or even source for the "thinner" glass would be
Motormite. Their "Help" line includes mirror glass. Call your local auto
parts houses and check to see if they carry Motormite or Dorman "mirror
repair" glass. Even the pre-cut stick on outside mirror glass may be the
thinner material you require. Most shops carry at least a small selection of
the mirror glass. At one time I saw a "universal" cut it yourself mylar type
mirror material to fix broken or discolored "interrior" mounted rear view
mirrors. It was credit-card thin plastic but had a perfect mirror reflection.

Just a few thoughts.
