My first car was a Mini which had been modified and my mate and I went out to give it a test run. He had to drive as I had no licence. The car was not taxed, tested (inspection) or insured. As we drove off at great speed we encountered a humpback bridge at great speed. As we went over the bridge the bonnet started to flap from the front and I remembered that it was not bolted on at the hinges. Being mindful of keeping the bonnet and our heads I shouted for my friend to stop. He braked hard and the bonnet flew off and skidded, sparking all the way (goodbye paint job) down the road. The car caught the bonnet up and hit it. We stopped, put the damaged bonnet on the back seats and gave the Mini a fast run down the local bypass at about 100mph with no bonnet. We returned to the place were the Mini was being garaged just as it ran out of petrol and I helped push it home. Not an experience to repeat. Daniel 1312 |
