Isn't it usually pretty easy to tell when smog stuff has been removed?
I'm not too familiar with the 1500, but on the 1275, you can see where
the stuff used to be connected to the intake manifold, and is now
plugged. A UK Spec engine wouldn't have these 'useless' attachment
points, would it? I remember the original post said the car didn't
appear to have any trace of ever having the equipment in the first
place.

I suppose it's possible, but I think that a desmogged US spec version is
more likely (particularly since the air pumps and catalytic converters they
used were unreliable and expensive)..
