Ben

Before you tear down the engine, do a compression test.
All four cylinders should rear 120 psi or better.
You may also have a missing or bad PCV valve (I'm not sure on UK spec
engines as to what, if any, emission stuff was on a 73)
If the crankcase is vented by a flat gizmo on top of the intake with a
hose to the timing cover, check that gizmo for a ripped rubber diaphram.
If you have a bad PCV, it will suck oil out of the motor and smoke like
a chimney. If you cap off the PCV oil will leak out of the rear of the
engine.
If you can get it to stop smoking but it starts leaking, then the engine
is probably still good and the crankcase vent system needs looking into.

For what it's worth
