Here's a strange one. What would cause a car to, after a short trip,
first, not start..... then, coming back to it later, it starts, but
blows the caps off the battery? This has happened twice in the last
four or five months. The battery is a year old, and looks like it got
cracked the second time this happened. Could this be a voltage
regulator problem? It's running fine now, with another battery (don't
want to use the cracked one), but I'm sure it's just a matter of time
before it happens again.

Don't assume that because you have found one problem, you have found the
ONLY problem.
