Jeff, 

I do mine with the timing cover off the engine.
There is a wire circlip that holds the wire wool in the canister, Use a
set of needle nose pliers to remove the clip, then pull out the old wire
with the same pliers.
I wouldn't do this with it on the engine, some wire filings do break
off. Flush with carb cleaner, replace wire (pot scrubby) replace clip.
I have done a number of these and have found a few t/covers that did not
have the circlip to hold in the wire, it was still in there??
