thanks for the responses.
yes, the needles are in tight and flush with the bottom of the piston.

if it makes a difference in jet sizes i have 1 1/8" carbs.

i just switched needles and will try tomorrow morning to start the engine and
see if there is a difference in the adj. of the carbs. i'll let you know how
it turns out.
(can't start it now, the kids are asleep).
