Well, after my first rebuild I didn't do this and not too long afterwards
I had to replace the cam and lifters. I spoke to quite a few of the
engine builders around here and they told me about the procedure.

Supposedly you can get away without doing it some of the time, but
your chances of success are greatly improved if you follow the plan...

Since doing so, I have never had cam/lifter problems again. OK, this
sounds like one of those TV testamonials, but all I can do is pass on
my experience and the collected wisdom I have gathered.

Personally, I'd suspect that what we are doing is following a procedure
in which slightly imperfect case hardening is less likely to fail.
