Quick question for the collective intelligence...
When I first got my '74 Midget, it had the usual weak alternator problem,
coupled with a couple shorts, leaving my battery dead more often than not. I
cleaned up most if not all shorts and replaced the alternator a while back, and
have been having just one peculiar symptom.
When I turn on my lights at night, they start off dim. Once I rev her above
3500 RPM (I have to be driving, not at a stand-still) the lights instantly
brighten and I can actually read my gauges. From then on out the lights remain
bright, at idles or whatever, until I turn her off.
A voltmeter on the battery shows 13.4 volts upon start-up with lights off, down
to just under 12 volts with all lights on. When I rev her up and brighten
things up and return to the voltmeter, I've got about 13 volts on the battery.
Any clues? I could still have a short somewhere, but one thing I'm sure of is
that I have good ground. (I replaced all ground straps and went through all
grounds I could find.)
Thanks for any tips.
