I have a midget that has been sitting in a garage for over 18 years with
a tank of gas. Nobody was successful in getting a very thick layer of
sticky material out of the tank (tried gas tank specialists - acid,
boiling etc.). Rather than dispose of an original tank that was still in
very good shape (other than the sediment) I experimented with every
household chemicals I could find.
Was very successful in cleaning the tank and restoring it to original
condition. I used Canadian Tire paint and varnish remover. Put in the
tank and left it overnight. This action softened the material to the
point that it flowed out. I repeated the process several times. I was
then faced with the challenge of getting the paint remover out of the
tank -- this material is alcohol based and methanol hydrate cleaned the
inside as if it were new..
I sealed the tank with a Hirst Product.
