I used some thick Teflon washers I found at Home Depot.  They seem to last
longer than rubber.

Are they actually available?
Found them on E-Bay.

How long could a piece of rubber or plastic last, being rubbed between two 
spring leaves like that?
Probably not that long, but I'm going to find out.
