You really should get a pressure gauge and measure the
pressure (before and after the regulator) to
see if there really is excess pressure. I really
doubt that a stock mechanical pump could cause
excess pressure.
If you are a clever cheapskate, you could avoid having
to buy a pressure gauge like this: Hook a long
piece of clear vinyl tubing to the fuel line
with a T-connector, and run the line straight up
for 10 feet or so, leaving the top open. One pound of
pressure will lift the fuel about 2.5 feet.
Occasionally (once every 2 or 3 years) one of my SU's
will start leaking, and fifteen minute's work removing
the float chamber cover and blowing out the float
valve
would fix the problem.
