Greg,
I'd agree with Joe. There's no need to use the clutch when switching
the overdrive, but if nothing else, lifting the throttle slightly when
you engage overdrive will prevent you getting a slightly jerky thump in
the back!
Feel free to switch the O/D on and off as often as suits you, they are
reasonably robust units, you don't need to molly-coddle them. Like Joe
says, using 3rd and switching in and out of gear is a handy way to
pootle around town, less effort than going up and down between 3rd and
4th.
One habit you'll have to get into is remembering to switch O/D off when
slowing down for a junction from prolonged high speed - if you don't
think about it, it's easy to shift down from 3rd with O/D straight into
2nd (where the inhibitor switch should automatically switch the O/D
off), so you effectively shift down two gear ratios at once without
expecting it - suddenly your engine is revving rather higher than
expected, and you've got a load of engine braking going on! You're not
going to break anything, but it does interrupt your nice smooth driving
style (if you driving style is smooth to start with...).
