I shaved my head about .080", and I was still able to use the original pushrods.
Be sure to have the adjusters screwed all the way up.  

Ideally the rods should be shortened.  The vendors sell hollow pushrods
where you can remove the ends and trim the tubing, but I have no idea
how well they work or of they are really necessary.

If you raised the rocker arm shaft with shims, it would get too high relative
to the valves, and the geometry of the rocker-arm-to-valve-stem would
be off.
