Weber stacks

Are the base of ram stacks required, to keep the auxillary venturi in
position. I can't imagine the choke and aux venturi not rattling around
without them.

I have four 39 mm stacks and they are too long. I am thinking of shortening
them, but would probably cost as much as buying 16 mm ones at $20.00 each.

I could cut the stacks off the base easy enough and not worry about parts
banging around, but I am up for advise or a trade.
