Thanks for the info guys - but trust me on this one - The solenoid has
ceased to be. Anybody got any spares?

low oil level, bad supply wire, bad ground wire, or bad o-rings around
the nose of the solenoid could be all that's wrong with it Huw!
It's a pain, and you'll need a thin wrench to get on the collar nut, but
pull that puppy out, apply 12V across the two terminals and see if it
engages. If not,try soaking it in a bit of kerosene to clean out the
piston/plunger end, and replace the o-rings it if starts operating. The
j-type solenoid should be pulling around 1-2 amps to hold it in. So that
means the
coil is in the range of 6 to 14 ohms.
14V/2 amps = 7 ohms 14V/1amp = 14 ohms
12/2 amps = 6 ohms 12V/1amp = 12 ohms
If it's a lot less than that...the coil may be shorted, but I personally
think that's unlikely. I'll lay odds its the o-rings are not sealing, or
the piston is sticky.
