It sounds like your new pump is not outputing the correct pressure. If it
was putting out too much pressure you will see and smell gaz coming out
of the ZS. If is too little pressure you will get miss and hesitation and
surges.
You can try to reduce the pressure by adding spacers or increase pressure
by reducing the spacer size between the pump and the block. I had the same
problem when I change my pump a few years back. The 1st new pump's arm was
sticking so far out it broke inside the engine and fell to the oil pan.
I had to return 2 pumps and it was not until the 3rd replacment that I got
that put out the correct pressure with my original spacer.
