Thanks to all that replied to this, especially Aaron and Doug who 
suggested using a vice to squeeze the bush first- this trick worked well 
for me - with just a little effort and no swearing I got the shocks in 
nicely.  I cannot believe the difference a new spring has made to the 
attitude of the car - I no longer feel like I have to peer over the 
bonnet to see in front!
