Best way is with stuff called Plastiguage, if the spelling is right.
You place it in the bearing area and then button it back up.
Remove it and then check the thickness with a Mic.
This will give you your gap and then compare to the Specs for acceptable
wear.

Hi Everyone,
This weekend, I plan on replacing my thrust washers in
my '70 Mk3 as a preventative maintenance procedure. I
bought two sets: standard and (I believe) .05" (or is
it .005") oversize set. How can I tell which set I
need to use? Is it a matter of visually checking how
much wear there is, or is there a way to measure (with
a micrometer for instance) lateral movement in the
crank? Anything else I should replace while I'm in
there (I'm also doing the timing chain and tensioner).
Bearings, that kind of thing? I'll be doing this job
with the engine in the car, gearbox attached.
