Ok, those of you who have been on this list for a while know that you've
heard that from me before. But I'm hoping that this time is closer to being
"done" (or as done as one can be) with this rebuild/euro conversion/tuning
project. Yes, I still have a long to-do list for the car, but I'd like to
be able to drive it while those are being done....
Here's what happened....
Last night, I installed new jets, fiddled with the choke linkages, and got
the carb bodies installed on the manifold.
Tonight, I finished up by installing the pistons/dashpots, putting fuel in
the float bowls, setting some initial settings, connecting fuel hoses, and
checking the initial timing setting. Found a minor problem with my
distributor installation, but will correct that as soon as I can get the
right part.
Got in the car, pulled the choke on, twisted the key, and she fired right
up! Settled into a nice 2000rpm idle (choke on, remember), so I first
looked at the timing. It was way advanced, so I turned it back a bit. As
the car warmed, I slowly pushed the choke off and adjusted the timing/idle
so it was around 900rpm at 8 deg before. I wanted to get it down around 6
deg before, but I think that Kent fast road cam is going to require a bit
more advance and rpm for a smooth idle. I'm guessing that it will be happy
around 10 deg before and 1100rpm or so. That cam certainly seems to give it
a lumpy idle, though.
Here's where it gets wierd. I thought I would look at the air flow, so I
put the Unisyn over the front carb and the rpms went through the roof -
around 5 grand or so! I shut it down, turned the idle screws out a half
turn or so, and refired. This time, I advanced the timing a bit and turned
the idle screws out a little. It was still around 1000rpm, but at 10 or 12
deg before. So I put the Unisyn over the front carb again, and it shot up
again, but this time to "only" 4 grand or so.
What am I doing wrong? I have the throttle shaft disconnected (the screw
clamps loose), so the only thing affecting the idle should be the idle
screws. I'm puzzled....
Any and all inputs welcome.
Thanks,
George P.
