I wouldn't recommend doing that.  The later exhaust manifolds are
prone to cracking.  I think the weight of the cat is partially to
blame.  I believe that this clamp is designed to take some of the
stress off of the manifold.

Interestingly enough, I had to remove and replace my manifolds this
weekend.  As usual I have no trouble removing the lower, inside
bolts as there is just enough room for a 9/16 open end, offset
wrench.  I wonder if I got lucky with production tolerances being
just large enough on my car to make this job relatively straight
forward.  (Of course my back aches for the next two days)
