James,

This sounds very much like a poor earth problem. This is common around the
rear light clusters (and not just on Spitfires - ever followed a car whose
brake lights dim rhythmically instead of the indicator working?) Take the
covers off the rear light clusters and check all the routes to ground are
sound and secure. I have a feeling the route to ground is just through the
screws holding things in place - this is a pretty poor route. Some people
have improved the original design by adding a wire between some point on the
cluster that should be earthed, and fixing the other end to the tub; you
need to scrape away the paint so that the other end of the wire grounds out
decently.
