For such a light rear end, the Spit seems to need really stiff rear shocks.
I had some generic cheapo monroes in the back, but they were worse than
the 25-year-old original OEM shocks.

Then I got the KYB rear (and front) shocks and I am pretty happy with them.
They feel extremely stiff, but they work pretty well, and are not as harsh as 
you
would expect.
