I just replied to Dave offlist and informed him that lateral movement of the
clutch throw out fork pin is not only normal, it is necessary, since it pivots
on the fork assembly as its engaged by the clutch slave.  The vertical slop
shouldn't be of any concern either, unless as you say, the pivot pin on the
opposite side of the bell housing which holds the fork in place is missing or
broken.  Vertical slop shouldn't have any bearing on the fore/aft travel of
the pin.

Things could have been worse.  Like discovering that you neglected to position
the pin through the hole in the bell housing before bolting the housing up to
the engine and found out later that the pin was stuck inside!  Don't ask me
how I know this!
