One old trick for floats inside a fuel tank was to use fishing floats for 
tackle.  Test it first by dousing one of the plastic floats in gas to make 
sure that it won't be affected by the fuel first though.  There's some 
pretty nifty floats out there that can do the trick nicely.  Avoid the red 
and white plastic ones though- the glue that holds the halves together can 
be affected by the gas.
