If the driveshaft U-joints were worn enough to make clicking noises,
the driveshaft would probably be so far out of balance that it
would vibrate horribly around 50mph.

Possibly the yokes that hold the axle shaft U-joints have enlarged
holes.  This means that the yokes will not tightly grip the U-joint cups,
and the cups will rock and creep around, wearing out the yoke holes even more.
If they were able to slide the cups into the yokes without much force, or
if the tops of the cups (where the circlips contact them) show signs of
wear from the cups creeping around, you may need to replace the yokes.
This means either the inner flange or the axle shaft itself must
be replaced.
