Very fishy, indeed. It's a re-paint --- the hood decal is
mis-positioned --- the engine compartment is untidy --- plug wires are
mismatched --- the forward frame is even grimier than the engine --- the
sun-visors are shot --- the tonneau-cover is filthy dirty and has a hole in
it --- the seat-foams need a dose of Viagra & the cloth covers need
something --- the small, square British Leyland badges in front of the hood
latches were discontinued around 1974, I believe --- the stainless
trim-frame is missing from the LF side marker-light --- the top/hood
installation is poor - it fits too loose. Plus, it is missing 2 lug-nuts &
has an electrical problem, according to the auctioneer (wouldn't most of us
address these 2 simple things BEFORE marketing our cars?).
Also, there is no overdrive or factory hardtop to boost the value, but the
wheels do.
My criticisms are based only upon the pictures, and I find that
pictures tend to flatter cars quite a bit. Up close personal viewing would
no doubt reveal several other items of interest. [Go to John's Spitfire
magazine website / owner's cars, and look at my '78 1500 (with O/D, H/T &
proper luggage rack). The picture looks like a $4000+ Spit, doesn't it?
But drop by and take a close look & you'll see that it's really just an
acceptable Spit worth maybe $2500+/-.]
The smartest bidder in that auction was "dennismenacebread" who bailed
out at $3800. There are a few, probably very few, Spits out there somewhere
that to me would be worth $7300, maybe $8000 to $10,000. But this isn't one
of them, by a long shot. And I'd never cough up that $8000 or $10,000 based
on pictures alone.
