Just had an e-mail from a guy, concerning the test for loose throttle shafts
that I suggested for John - the test where you spray carb cleaner where the
shaft enters the carb, and listen for an RPM increase.

He referred me to the website of a specialist carb re-builders:
http://www.recarbco.com/technical/shaft_clearances/shaft_clearances.html

Basically their story is that this method is unsound - you can get an RPM
increase even if the shaft/housing clearance is correct. The only way to
check for sure is to measure the shaft and housing. Although it seems to me
if you remove the shaft and the wear is visible, you can be pretty sure from
that too!!

I'm no expert in this area, and I've never tried the method myself anyway.
I just thought I'd pass on the info I was sent, so you can all make up your
own minds.
