John,

Sealed beam 'plug in' halogen lights ARE available in the US. That's
what I have on my Spit. No modifications at all.

Halogen headlights give out far more light for the same wattage ie a 60
watt halogen light is far brighter than the original 60 watt sealed beams
(or bulbs in certain countries). US and UK cars have sealed beams as
standard (which have the advantage of being sealed therefore the
reflective part doesn't decay with age), so to have halogen lights you
need to fit bulb type replacements then a variety of bulbs can be fitted
- up to 130 watt main beams (which are illegal in the UK and won't do
much for the standard wiring or switches). As far as I know sealed beam
halogen lights are not available in 7 inch, but perhaps they are in the
US. They would be great as the light output wouldn't diminish with age.

Has anyone found a good bright bulb to substitute for the weakly lit
gauges
in the Spitfire? It sure would be nice to have a brighter, clearer view
of
  them when driving at night.
I was also wondering if anyone has tried any of the replacement lights
for
the exterior - halogen, LED, or even the new blue "euro" light
substitutes?
Seems any/all of these might be of benefit if they don't strain the
electrical system. I would appreciate any feedback anyone has in this
  regard....TIA.
