Hi, Paul.
Even if the pistons are correctly sized for the bore, oversize rings
should not be fitted. The pressure that the ring applies to the
cylinder wall varies [somewhat] around the circumference of the ring.
A properly sized ring will have an even distribution of pressure,
while an oversize ring will apply most pressure furthest from the gap
and the least near the gap. Simply grinding the gap larger does not
change the resultant non-circularity of the remaining ring. This will
result in poor wear and a non-cylindricaly wear pattern. Just all bad
news.
