Hi Suzie
Just got to this hope it's not too late.
I think the easiest way is the size of the front pulley, to the best of my
knowledge the pulley for the small crank engine is always smaller than for
the large crank engines, certainly you can't fit the front pulley from a
large crank to a small crank, so it is down to whether the small crank
engines were ever fitted with the larger pulley for an alternator.
Hope this helps

Subject: How to recognise a small crank...
| I'm goiing to collect a recon short engine for Baby Blue (Mk III SPitfire)
| next week I'm told that the company removes the original engine numbers
and
| apply their own, so, is there an easy way of confirming whether I'm
actually
| getting a small crank engine, as in the FD series for a MkIII rather than
| the later ones used in the Mk IVs.
| Suzie & BB (engineless now in anticipation of a wonderful new addition!)
