I agree w/ John B. on the welder controls.

The variable wire speed really makes things easier.

I got a Lincoln 125 at Home Depot for $300.

I don't think a course is required, but practice a
lot.
Horizontal, vertical, part way upside down (unless you
have a rotissery for your shell).
