Chris it's part of the original Lucas electronic ignition.
I'm away from home so don't have any schematics to hand, but suffice to say
if you are not using the original Lucas systems then you don't need it. e.g.
Crane ( i.e Allison) and Pertronix etc. replacement sysytems don't need it.

I am sure you will find all about it if you search the archives.
