The original starter on my '79 Spit quit more than a year ago. But I
am certain it is only brushes and so I plan to eventually get it rebuilt
and put ont he shelf as a spare. I bought a replacement because I drive
my Spit all the time (yes, even in the winter. I'm taking it tomorrow to
scout out a place that may have spare parts.) and couldn't let it stay
down for long. As you might imagine, sometimes it cranks a little longer
when the temperature is down around 10 and has been all night, but I have
had no problem with the starter because of this.

Now the battery, that's a problem. Or rather, I think it is the alternator.
I don't think the Lucas system provides enough current to keep the battery
fully charged. I think this spring I will be ordering one of the Delco
real replacements.

All the best.
